Since heli simmers have different requirements to scenery and controls etc, I suggest to found a kind of heli-simmer-community for flightgear.

flightgear-users is a good place for helicopter specific discussions, as are
the other fgfs lists and the irc channel.

...on the other hand neither the mailing list nor the irc channel can be expected to be easily available to everybody, so the idea to have some people set up & maintain a specific section about helicopter flight on flightgear.org (or externally) is not that bad, I think.

As a novice user I would certainly prefer using a webpage or forum
instead of having to sign up with a mailing list or try to find the
right people on IRC.

Ron, if you really want to gather some information about the specific
requirements or experiences for helicopter sim folks, you might start
by using the FlightGear wiki and put your stuff there at first, later
on one could also talk to Curtis about directly adding the stuff on
the webpage for FlightGear.org -

May I am late and such a community (conspiracy?;-)) already exists, in this case I'll be happy to get involved...

No such community. The mailing lists aren't about fixed wing only, but
about all aspects of fgfs. This includes rotary wing. Let us know your
perception of helicopter specific scenery and controls requirements! :-)

regarding the idea of a real "community" I'm not sure whether there are enough (helicopter flight sim) users for anything like that to be realized.

But collecting some information is certainly not a bad idea, it could
be maintained on an ocassional basis.
