Chris/ flightgear list

Where can I start? This is what I've tried.

Attempted install of executable using fgsetup-0.9.8a.exe from flightgear

First attempt I got error message 'ssgInit called without valid openGL context' when I tried to select an aircraft.

After rebooting the machine Windows detected a problem and would not boot. I had to boot in safe mode. After some time I got windows to boot normally by disabling the graphics driver, rebooting and re-installing the driver (nVidia GeForce graphics card with the latest driver).

Uninstalled flightgear and tried a second time with the same result including the problem after reboot. Disabled and re-installed driver again!

Uninstalled flightgear and attempted a build from source with the following issues:- Install guide says metakit is required and provided with SimGear but it is not in where specified in the src_libs folder - I skipped installing metakit. Configure step of SimGear failed saying that openal library is required and pointing me to a README.OpenAl file which I could not find anywhere.

I found a thread on openal for cygwin which pointed to a tar to download and install. I followed the instructions but SimGear build still fails with the same error message.

Went back for a third attempt at the executable install. This time the install appeared to work. I selected the first Cessna 172 in the aircraft list. Part of the dashboard appeared but upside down! Quit and restarted flightgear, this time selecting the second Cessna 172 in the list. Seemed successful. I could hear the engine, see out the window and the view controls seemed to work but the engine controls (9 and 3 on numeric pad with num lock on) did nothing hence I could not take off.

Rebooted the machine and tried again. Got the original ssgInit error and the program shutdown.

Gave up and wrote this email!!

My ultimate aim is to build flightgear from source so that I can attempt some development.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated!

Mick.

Hi Mick,

Are you experiencing some specific errors?

If not, I would not worry about it. Make sure you have a video card
that supports OpenGL. You should make sure you have the latest driver
for it as well.

In all 100 or so Wintel installs I have done I have never had a
problem with the items the guide references.

You should download the Win32 executable from FlightGear - it is the
easiest way to install on Windows.

I have a rudimentry install guide - but it is more for the PC
Clueless, i.e. Click Next, etc. FlightGear should be a relatively
painless, simple install on Windows.

The problems most people have are with video cards & drivers that
cannot support the sim.

I am having some difficulties with the installation of flightgear (and
supporting libraries) on windows. I am trying to use the installation guide
on the flightgear website but it seems a little jumbled.

Under the section 'Preparing the development environment under windows'
there is no mention of windows but lots of talk of Linux and many parts
which are not clear to me e.g.

"... make sure you have all necessary OpenGL libraries..." which ones?

"Also you are expected to have a bunch of tools installed that are usually
required to compile the Linux kernel"

"Please compare the release of the Plib library with the one that ships with
your Linux distribution"

Does anyone have a step by step guide dedicated to Windows (2000/XP)
including which standards of libraries (plib, metakit, simgear etc) are
compatible?

Any help greatly appreciated.

If I manage to get it working I'll post a detailed step by step guide of how
I did it!

Mick.
