Well, there is some generic flightgear autoliplot. I believe that I copied 
that from just an other model. That autopilot is not very sophisticated or 
well tuned.
The more important stuff is the flight control system of the f-18.
Usually the aerodynamic forces get bigger on higher speeds. As a result, 
controlers can get unstable on high speeds.
The basic trick in the f-18 is that the controler gains will be smaller at 
higher speeds, compensating that effect somehow.
Also the pitch control in that bird includes a g limiter for high speeds 
together with a angle of attack controler for slow speeds. That is, the 
actuators are controled in a way that pitch command is effectively a angle of 
attack command. Especially that angle of attack pitch control improoves 
flying qualities *very* much.
That is somehow like the f-14 demo included in matlabs aeroblock toolbox.
