Let me try to say this as clearly and simply as possible.

You need 3d accelerated video hardware to run FlightGear smoothly.

From my recollection of your earlier postings you do not have this capability on your laptop. Or you have a video chipset with really poor 3d performance, or really poor opengl drivers or all of the above.

So basically, you are out of luck with your laptop. No amount of new drivers, or new software, or different operating systems is going to be able to make your hardware run any faster than it does today. No amount of software or drivers or different operating system is going to be able to make your laptop run 3d programs fast.

If you had a PC, you could fix the problem by dropping in a new video card, but that's not possible on a laptop.

Windows and Linux both have a "software" implimentation of opengl by default, but FlightGear will run *very* slowly without hardware accelerated video.

So it's great to experiment and learn about all of these issues. Linux is a great thing to know a bit about. I'd push through the cd writing hurdles and at least give it a try. But nothing you are going to do (short of purchasing a different laptop with a good 3d video chipset) is going to help you run FlightGear any faster.

Hello Melchior:

Your understanding of OpenGL is like mine when it comes to Windows. It was
why I was acting very cautious of something I know little about. However,
from this forum and talking indirectly to professional expertise on this
subject, I have learnt that PC's will have to have cards inserted into PC's
to allow them OpenGL. On the other hand I now know from the Forum and,
corroborated elsewhere, that it is normal practice if you have a laptop
operating under Windows but want OpenGL, to use a process of allowing the
laptop to boot from a disc without running Windows.

Having read about Knoppix, Bit Torrent and "burning" to a CD, I know, in
theory, that it is possible to boot the laptop, with necessary changing to
the BIOS, if necessary, to run the PC with FG on it without Windows
running!!! Knoppix has a vast amount of games, which are not of interest to
me, including music, but, more importantly, it has FG waiting to be used.

As with any new software, that one is cautious about, especially if it is
changing the function of a computer, as I know it, that I posed the
questions. I am back home on Sunday for the All Saints holiday, so I will be
trying to burn Knoppix on to a CD, if my questions are answered. Soon
afterwards I will inform the Forum if it works and I can run FG on the
laptop as described. I am sure that there are others who would be keen to
know if it is possible.
