Hi,

could you describe a bit more precisely your system. I am a bit sceptical
about what you are doing. The argument lists in plib have changed in the
past and the very basic rule is to get compatible packages. The fact that
the headers are slightly incompatible does not please me too much.
The rendering acceleration is a Xwindows issue. The file that requires a lot
of care is XF86Config under /etc or /etc/X11 (I do not know exacytly). Also
note that the new X-Windows 4.0.1 is (in general) much better about 3D
accelaration but there may be some exceptions for some cards like the ATI
Rage Pro which works properly only on XFree3.3.6.

>From my own experience, I would propose the following plan:

(i) Go to the site www.xfree.org and look what is the status of X-Windows
concerning your hardware.

(ii) For the moment, do not try to build FlightGear but instead try to make
Mesa and plib working properly. There is a good test called ./gears which
clearly shows if you are using 3D acceleration or not. For example with a
GeForce3, my gears "turn" at about 600 frames/second. To make this working
properly, one needs to be extra careful.

(iii) In some cases, the real "cure" is either to throw away the Linux
distribution or the graphic card. You can find reasonably good cards (Nvidia
in particular) for about 100.-$. The Nvidia cards are well maintained.

Also as a remark, my SuSe7.2 distribution is more or less incompatible with
FlightGear. Officially, Mesa is supposed to disappear and to be replaced by
a new generation GUI. Nevertheless, I had to hack my installation, to remove
that "new" technology stuff and put back Mesa. I installed the corresponding
plib and I modified the file XF86Config to edit my X-Windows.

When plib works PROPERLY, installing SimGear and FlightGear is quite
straightforward.

Also, make sure that the base package is compatible.

Yours

JJ Malosse
