Hi there,

So I need a new graphics card.

I have:
Debian testing, with current-release X.org and all the DRI goodness
that this implies.
Athlon 2600+, 32 bit
1-1.5GB RAM, depending on if I can get them working together properly.
Currently, an Nvidia GeForce 2 MX400, 128MB RAM

Is your current card AGP or PCI slot based? If its AGP then you
should be able to upgrade quite easily. If its a PCI based
card and your system does not have an AGP slot then things may
not be so easy...the limited bandwidth of the PCI bus means you
may not be able to get a card capable of doing a decent job of
Flightgear, unless you compromise on screen resolution or on
visual quality...

So my question is: What's the current equivalent of an MX400, from
NVidia or ATI, and what's one step up? I'm not really in a position to
go much over about $150 Australian, call it $115US or 90Euro at

Something like an NVidia GeForce 6200 with AGP 8x bus will be
several steps up from the MX400, provided you have AGP...these
can be had from less than AU$100...

If you can stretch to just under AU$200 you can get an NVidia
GeForce 6600 with 256MB video RAM...that will be a few steps
up from the 6200 again...

Either of those with the latest proprietary driver from NVidia
will be more than adequate to display Flightgear with full eye-
candy at OK resolutions...

Kind regards,

Chris Wilkinson, Brisbane, Australia.
