Hello FlightGear users: Not having used a flight simulator since I owned an Apple II, I am very happy to have FlightGear installed and running well on my laptop. What a great program, I really like it!
I am a bit frustrated though, because I can only fly during the daytime hours. Once dusk or nighttime falls, my laptop system video crashes and either reboots or restores to another frozen state, eventually blanking the video screen. A couple of times the sun setting over the horizon would trigger the crash, but the computer also crashed at midnight over the Grand Canyon on a star lit night. If I sit the plane at an airport and press the 't' key to warp through the day, the display will sometimes cycle through the night mode without crashing and sometimes will not. The bottom line is that my computer is crashing within 30 seconds of using FlightGear in the dark, and so I only fly during daytime hours. My laptop is a Pavillion 6310 with an ATI Express 200M (Windows XP calls it an Express 200X) with an AMD 64 3200 Processor with specs listed at this page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=500264&lang=en&docname=c00392189 I updated all the drivers I could. The video driver was the 8/3/05 driver, so then I installed the ATI Catalyst 5.5 (because Catalyst 6.6 does not support the 200M CARD) which reverted to the 5/3/05 driver. That did not work, so I went back to the HP web site to reinstall the 8/05/05 driver with Catalyst 5 now installed on this laptop, but I just could not get this thing configured to fly at night without freezing up. I have only installed the FlightGear Windows XP 0.9.10 file, which works beautifully otherwise. I've tried disabling most of the video options, and I've also tried the different Performance / Quality options of OpenGL Am I going about this the wrong way? Please offer any insight.
