I don't know anything about LCD screens but if you have a pretty "old"
CRT you may - depending on your hardware (videocard and CRT) increase
FG's framerate (with sync on) by setting the X-Server display refresh
rate  to a higher value.
This is very easy for me with NVIDIAs X Server Setting program, so you
might have something similar.

I have 1280 x 1024 with 85 Hz so FlightGear runs 85 frames/sec (max or
less depending on the scenery - but not more).
