Also, double check your joy-stick.
Start FlightGear. Press h to diplay the heads-up-display. Check the slider
bar on the far left to see that the throttle goes from 0% to 100%.
Or look at File > Browse Inernal Properties /controls/engines/engine/throttle.
Check that the value goes from 0 to 1 when your joy-stick throttle is moved
full range.

You can have the sim start with the parking brake engaged, either:
add the switch "--prop:/controls/gear/brake-parking=1" to the command
line,
or add /controls/gear/brake-parking=1 to advanced/properties in the
FGRun GUI program,
or put the line "--prop:/controls/gear/brake-parking=1" in your .fgfsrc
file.
