What kind of crash do you get? Instant reboot? It is quite strange that FlightGear manages to crash the entire OS (even for windows). One thing that happens to me sometimes is that FG runs into NaN's which leads to a blank screen and way below 1 fps. If I run FG in full screen mode and kill it (by logging in from another box) it sometimes leaves X in a unusable state. Note, though, that in my case if I give the keyboard commands for exit (ESC + enter) and leave FG alone it eventually exits cleanly.
