A modern operating system (even windows) :-) shouldn't ever let this happen
to itself. A solid lockup typically points to a driver bug or possible
hardware problem.

True. You know, I've beat up on Windows XP pretty severely over the past
several years and have only once had a blue screen, and my machines runs
constantly.
