Welcome to flightgear!
For moving maps you have a couple of options. Firstly there is a program 
called atlas, which you can compile yourself but is also in the repos of at 
least one linux distro (ubuntu). Alternatively, point your browser to 
http://mpmap02.flightgear.org to see other players participating in 
multiplayer mode. This only requires about three more command line options to 
be set and no software installation. For details check

Multiplayer mode also gives you the advantage of seeing the 
other "multiplayers" as you fly!
Explore mpmap. Be sure to check out the "nav" tab at the bottom which will 
reveal a host of goodies - nav aids, weather, etc.
