I grabbed that on the web, but trying to install a 2000 package on a 
2007 OS is asking for trouble.
It also appears the make files will only work after an earlier version 
is already installed, as a bunch of directories, etc. it mentioned were 
not there.  I couldn't make much sense of it.

Yes, apparently.  I have no idea how one installs .deb files on Red Hat, 
I guess you don't.  I learned how to do this with a very early FGFS, and 
am kind of scared off by the 2-3 days it took then.  Hopefully, it will 
be less of an exercise this time.
