I agree, Heiko. My band has plenty of recordings, many of which are on the
web, but I don't feel like they've "officially" been released until we put
them on a CD or cassette and print up liner notes and a cover. Information
is fine and good by itself, but it doesn't lend itself to permanency or much
of a sense of aesthetics.
I seriously doubt this rumored demise of the book, too. If anyone hasn't
noticed, the internet is actually being used to make the sales of books
boom. And this development of the so-called "virtual book" that would
supposedly be as portable as a real book doesn't faze me, either. Looking at
printed words on paper is pleasing to the eye; reading text on a CRT or LCD
is taxing.
