Actually no it not. Its function of OSX's FreeBSD UNIX underpinnings and has nothing to do with The Apple OS.

There are three components to OSX.

The Mac OSX can be described as:

in the very Deep entrails is the Mach Kernel.(equiv to the bone)

the next layer is the latest version of FreeBSD UNIX (equiv to the Muscle)

The Quartz interface is the final layer (the Mac OS look and feel)(equiv to the skin)

You can use just as easily X11 (equivalent Xfree86) or any other UNIX based GUI; as the outside layer.

UNIX Zip, and PC Zip are directly compatible. it when you get to derivatives such as Gzip that PC may falter.

Rich,

Take care with OSX archiving as it is a proprietary format which I do not think works when you try to decompress under another OS !

Thanks, Steven.
Just discovered I can zip Mac files using the built-in 'Create Archive' function.
Reacquainting myself with the Mac environment is fun!

OS X has a built in ZIP function, IIRC. Windows XP does as well.
