I was just wondering whether PKware was still around.

I dealt with PKzip, and PKunzip back when I rked for a school sytem and dealt with Epson Equity I, II, II, IBM PS1, and PS2 machines , and Generic equivelents of X86, 286, and 386. With DOS 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, Windows 3.0, 3.1, 3.1, and finally Windows 95.

I though Microsoft took over PKware ina hostile takeover and renamed PXzip, winzip. Stealling Technology like the always have.

(maybe not in the Legal sense of the word, but morally by offerring 1/25 the value of the item and holding a stick over their head saying "if you don't do this we will tell people that use our products not to use yours. If they do they stand to lose their rights to use ours.")

Technically speaking there is no zip standard,
one has never been published.

Not correct, Justin.

Phil Katz, the inventor of the .ZIP format, published the format almost
immediately. It was stable, open, and fully published.

In fact, that is how WinZip began. (They now dominate over Katz' own
company, PKWare, makers of PKZip.)

Phil Katz passed away in 2000.

Since then, both companies have, for the first time, independently altered
their .ZIP format. PKWare published their format changes. WinZip has not.

This means that compatibility between the two can be a problem, and
complicates Linux/Mac/*nix inter-operability with Windows.

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!
