There is no requirement for repairing permissions in OSX.
Its is highly recommended to do before and after installing major software such as FileMaker, Office and such.
This is a UNIX thing. If MS were to adopt a UNIX based system, they would be dealing with the same thing.
WE also have manually deal with UNIX CRON Task.
IN a UNIX Setting this is done automatically late at night 3-6am; because Most UNIX Boxes stay on 24/7 365/366 days a year.
While the average Mac User Turns their machine on in the morning and off at quiting time at work. Or at nigh just before going to bed.
So we have to use Utilities that do this during the day while we are at our computers.
When you use a UNIX based system (FreeBSD) Its something you deal with.

Thanks everyone.
I agree Steven, that yes, FMI has to follow the requirements, and I can't fault it for doing so. Glad to realize that the problem isn't me.
Good or bad, it isn't as easy as install/update on the Mac.
Hi Thomas,
Taking the opportunity to point out that "easy" is in the eye of the beholder (which takes nothing away from your statement, but expands on it). To me, there have been at least as many posts from folks trying to install and/or update FMP on OS/X and stumbling on silent failure due to "permissions" which set themselves, or don't, in some circumstances, and maybe others, all of which seems "unnecessary" to a primarily-Windows user like me ... as there have been folks who aren't used to this Windows requirement.
That doesn't make one better than the other- just differences. I'm in an environment where we will have both Mac and Win users.
Absolutely.
Interestingly, our IT guy (the Win expert) had no clue why it was asking for the CD.
Maybe not used to multi-user server applications that need to know whether the current installation is a "onesie" or a VLA?
LOL.
Glad there was a simple fix for your issue.
Cheers,
Anne
