It's FreeBSD UNIX not Linux (alhough they are similar and Linux can be installed on a Mac with no problem.

as for the extensions you can set in finder preferences for files or folders to hide the 3 letter extensions or not.

the three letter extensions are natuaral to UNIX, Linux, and Windows.

Since OSX's underlying system is UNIX it normal to have the extesnions. But for Mac people that are use to the OS( and lower style they can be turned off.

Hi Gary,

As a point of clarification, Apple accommodates extensions on files. Also, since OS X is based on Linux, the extensions are not limited to 3 characters.

Some may think that file extensions are a step backward, but actually they are normal for every operating system except the Mac OS prior to OS X.

The resource fork was unique to the Mac OS prior to OS X and caused many issue with cross-platform compatibility. Moving to the extension format brings the Apple OS in line with all other operating systems. I am referring to UNIX, Linux and the dreaded Windows.

OS X has a way of 'hiding' the extension if you choose not to view it. There is a setting in the Finder Preferences>Advanced that lets you toggle on/off the extension. Keep in mind, the extension is still on the file, this is a way for you not to have to see it.

The "3-char-extension" was a HUGE step backward for Apple, IMO. I get files
all the time with an extension (usually added by Windoze XP, silently,
invisibly) that are NOT the type of file the extension indicates.
