Well,
In the ongoing saga of my inability to run the defrag (it won't EVER finish
anymore - keeps hanging up and starting over saying the data on the disk has
changed - I left it for twelve hours last time and even that was not
enough!) I decided to get Norton System Works and use the Norton Utilities
defragger. So tonight I am trying to install that, and it won't do it. I
keep getting a message that says it needs IE 5.0 or higher in order for the
one-button checkup to work. I have IE 4.0 (I rarely use IE except for
looking at my web pages to be sure they view okay for people who use IE).

I thought this just meant that one feature (the one-button) wouldn't work,
but no, I keep getting a message that the installation was not successful
and I should try again. I have tried three times (restarted computer between
each time) with same results. And I checked and there appears to be nothing
installed.

I went online and tried to download IE 5.5, but I kept getting messages that
the scripts were not running properly and it would not download. I hesitate
to go for IE 6, since already IE 5 is huge and also (I have it at work)
seems to update Outlook Express at the same time and the newer versions of
Outlook Express will not share address books with Outlook - which I
currently need them to do.

Just in case it matters, I am running Windows 98. I have over 100 MB of ram,
and a 4 gig hard drive. The computer is three and a half years old
(dinosaur, eh?). I shut down all programs - including the Microsoft Office
Shortcut Bar - before running the Norton disk.

It wanted me to uninstall any Virus programs before installing, so I have
uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus 2001 - so in addition to the problems I was
hoping the System Works would address, I'm eager to get this taken care of
so I can get the Virus program protection on again.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
-cynthia
