Getting out of the niche (or not getting in it in the first place) has more to do with PR than with technical merit. Else NeXT, the Canon Cat, or Smalltalk would be both alive and popular. For PR you want incremental changes and concrete applications, while for innovative stuff you want crazy ideas without bonds to the past, and time to crystallize them.
