  You probably have figured out by now that you are not going to get
any simple answers from some people...

  On the other hand, CASIO and SHARP (and name any manifacturers
except HP) calculators are used by billions of people, and they don't
follow the math precedence rules.

  It means that the right precedence in a language also depends on the
way you input an expression, for example.  You could imagine a system
in which you first enter an example expression with concrete number in
the calculator manner and then substitute the numbers with variables.
In such a language, you would use left-to-right precedences.
