As mentioned in comment 12 for ucs-miscfixed-font and in bug 1767384 for bitmap-lucida-typewriter-fonts, the spacing is wrong with the OTB fonts produced using the fonttosfnt approach. So the workaround really only seems to work for terminus-fonts.
