Here's what I was able to scrounge up... This first page has a couple posts from the TeX crowd about this and a list of relevant works. This may aid in a follow up
http://www.pvv.ntnu.no/~aslakr/hz.html This appears to be a short copy of Zapf's original paper on the HZ program: http://cajun.cs.nott.ac.uk/compsci/epo/papers/volume6/issue3/zapf.pdf A related paper, much longer, but in French: http://www.gutenberg.eu.org/pub/GUTenberg/publicationsPDF/27-karow.pdf Some mentions of TEX of the HZ program: http://ftp.fi.muni.cz/pub/tex/local/cstug/thanh/hz/description.pdf?N=A Also, you may want to look for documentation of the KF-program and the JP-program, as they appear to be sub-modules of the HZ-program. Other than this, documentation seems scant, and I see some references to patents on the program, suggesting that you're not going to find open documentation easily. -----Original Message----- From: Victor Mote [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, January 28, 2003 10:44 AM To: mailing list fop-dev Subject: source for hz algorithm Hello all: I have been looking for some time for a source for the HZ (Hermann Zapf) algorithm which (as I understand) optimizes line breaks for multiple lines, looking for rivers, too many lines in a row ending in hyphens, etc. I think I first saw it referenced in Bringhurst's book, and that it was implemented by a European company that is now out of business. I understand that TeX implemented it or something similar, and that Adobe may have used the TeX algorithm in InDesign. The closest thing I have found to a source for the algorithm itself is that Knuth's "Digital Typography" may have it or at least a discussion of it. Do any of you have additional information on this, such as how to find the algorithm itself? Is it patented? Along these same lines, I recently acquired a book that may be helpful to others -- James Felici's "The Complete Manual of Typography" (Adobe Press) has a lot of good information both for users and developers. Chapter 10 on H&J was especially useful, and somewhat prompted the above questions.
