I don't know if it is the chip (micrcode) or the firmware driving the chip. I was told that the reason the paddle card (from an un-named vendor) didn't work was because the bridge chip they used didn't support packet command set. That was the comment from their technical support. If you want to send me a private email I will give you the name of the vendor. I tried their card and it did not recognize the ATAPI devices. I don't care what the spec says, I am telling you what my testing and their technical support confirmed.
