Jim, Actually I believe that the SATA docs have a unique signature for a block mode device vs an ATAPI device. The SATA docs specify that a ATA (block mode) device returns 0xEB14 in the cyl high / low reg while an ATAPI (PACKET mode) device returns 0x00. See pg 238 of SATA 1.0a gold. No. What I said was what I meant. Refer to these documents: "Serial ATA II: Port Multiplier, Revision 1.1" > http://www.sata-io.org/docs/pm_1_1_Gold.pdf section 7.4.1. "Port Multiplier Discovery (Informative)" "Serial ATA II: Extensions to Serial ATa 1.0a, Revision 1.2" > http://www.sata-io.org/docs/S2Ext_1_2_Gold.pdf Given the <current> (external) SATA specs, a serial ATA and a serial ATAPI device would have the same poweron signature. So, we have unique signatures for parallel: ATA parallel: ATAPI serial: ATA <and> ATAPI serial: port multiplier Now, it is <another> question to ask if that is proper or not, which I leave for someone else to answer. Unfortunately it was apparently never fixed. I agree with your proposed fix. Note there is a typo in e04127r0 section 2.3 (in the background section): "There was never any intention that a serial ATA device have a different signature _than a serial ATAPI device_." It should say "than a parallel ATA device." ATA and ATAPI need to have different signatures, as do SATA and SATAPI. SATA=ATA and SATAPI=ATAPI is fine. -- Rob Elliott, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hewlett-Packard Industry Standard Server Storage Advanced Technology https://ecardfile.com/id/RobElliott > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Monday, October 04, 2004 2:46 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [t13] Documents posted > > > This message is from the T13 list server. > > > > > > > These docs have been posted to the T13 website. > > This one was passed around at the August meeting. > It is the presentation from TCG > e04134r0 ?
