I second the motion of dual PIII and lots of RAM. My new machine is a Asus
(Via chipset) dual 1 GHz PIII with 512 MB PC-133 SDRAM and Windows 2000.
Very stable. Protel 99SE did crash once (so far), but it didn't take any
other application or the OS down with it. And none of this nonsense "The
system has become unstable. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to lose all unsaved data in
your applications, piss away a half-day's work, reboot the machine, and
create cross-linked files which contain data that will crash Office
applications if you try to open them."
Don't pout, Linux, I still love you (sort of)...
IMO, a dual-CPU machine is much "smoother" than a single-CPU machine. I
don't know exactly why, but I suppose that when Windows is tying up one CPU
with Windows overhead, it is able to schedule other tasks on the other CPU.
It's still not hard real-time response, but it's pretty good. However, I
don't think dual CPUs will do you any good unless you use NT or 2000.
I chose PIII and not Athlon because there aren't any Athlon dual-CPU DDR
chipsets out yet. I did not choose P4 because a dual-PIII is faster (and
"smoother") than a single P4. I chose PC-133 SDRAM and not RDRAM because I
can't stand Rambus and their tactics.
With regard to the graphics card, it's important to get one with very stable
drivers for your OS. That's much more important for Protel than extreme
performance. From what I have seen on this newsgroup in the past, if
there's a bug in the video driver, Protel will find it...
