Ivan,
As a side point on the P3 verses the P4, the P4 was a major F---Up on the
thermal side. The P4 spin doctors
are pumping Step Technology. In some use the P3 flat beats the P4.
What is ST ? it is pretty wraper on their thermal issues surrounding the P4.
She runs too
hot at sustained top billed clocking. ST decrements the clock speed in 12%
steps until temperatures drop in line. Under
bursty type loads the P4 will edgeout the P3 but not for sustained clocking
rates. The P3 runs cooler on equalized benchmarks
that require sustained high speeds. Intel is aware of this and putting
window dressing on it. The real problem shows up
on the mobile platforms where thermal solutions are limited. So even though
you may be buying a laptop with a 1.3 GHz
P4 your sustained performance is much lower. The best single CPU solution
for the dollar is the Athlon 1.33 Ghz but
as mentioned dual MB's are in question. Simple forced air cooling schemes
are reaching their limits. If you running a top
end P4 give it as much air as you can tolerating the added noise. Ducted air
fans are the best, also the noisiest.
This is well documented and something I'm familiar with since we have been
working on liquid thermal solutions across
Intel, AMD and Power PC platforms for nearly 2 years. This summer is not the
only thing getting hotter.
Keep cool this summer
