Hi,
I'm defining our internal process for designing SMT land patterns. Our
company provides a PCB design service; therefore, my design process needs to
be well defined.

Generally, through the IPC specification and part data sheets I can
relatively quickly design land patterns. However, I run into trouble when
the part does not match an IPC standard. Specifically, I don't understand
how to specify the Grid Placement Courtyard (i.e. the silk-screen outline).

Here's the three design conditions I've identified:

1.) If the part matches an IPC standard then I use it.

2.) If the part does not match an IPC standard then I use the manufacturer's
recommended land pattern. However, the IPC standard specifies the Grid
Placement Courtyard and the manufacturer does not. How do I determine the
Grid Placement Courtyard?

3.) If the part does not match an IPC standard AND the manufacturer does not
provide a land pattern then I use the IPC land pattern calculator on their
website. The calculator does not specify the Grid Placement Courtyard.

I'd appreciate any help.
