For me, this approach makes sense because I can directly the area I need when 
I place parts.

So was I, but I must be using it wrong because it never species the PLMT 
GRID. Were you looking up a part or designing a land pattern?

That's how I understand the spec.

I think the Grid Placement Courtyard is intended to allow sufficient space 
for the pick-and-place machine to place the part slightly in error and still 
retain good solderability.
