One reason:
Protel is programmed in Delphi. Without taking special action Delphi can
use a lot of resources. If Windows resources get low then the system can
become unstable and Protel is *much* more apt to crash or hang. (Don't
start on Delphi vs C++ vs whatever - as the point I am making is that
unless careful action is taken to delay creation of forms, Delphi programs
with lots of graphical elements do use lots of resources. But since you
ask, I think Protel should be written in COBOL.)
Resources are not the same as memory - adding more memory does not increase
resource availability in Win95/98/98SE/Me. Win NT/2 does not have the same
resource limitation. So WinNT/2K is not subject to this common cause of
hanging/instability/slow down in Protel. This is one of the great
advantages of the professional grade OS's over the home grade ones. Many
users of 95/98... manage this problem successfully by monitoring resource
usage (using the Resource Meter application) and restart Protel when
resources get low.
Protel has very high resource usage - especially the Design Rules dialog,
which has many tabbed dialog within tabbed dialogs, and the tabbed dialog
is a great resource hog.
