It also seems that the language selection is over written by the file
extension, i.e. *.bas for basic *.asm for assembler etc...

The wrong process is connected to the 'Tools>> Change Language' menu item.

I am not 100% sure but I think it should be the process
'TextEdit:SetupLanguage'

It is possible to change it in the same way as you do customization. (The
arrow menu top-left)

I think there is also the option to change the 'Language' in the left panel
if the textfile is 'active'.
