choosing distro depends upon what you want to do in your system.
Debian 5.0 with xfce also can be light weight. I have been using it in
my system which has 384mb RAM and 2.26 GHz processor and every thing
works fine. I hope it works fine with 256mb RAM too. But you must use
alternate applications for the one which needs high memory like
FireFox browser.
