Fair point.

I would still prefer that Fossil self-tune, however.  While it is true that my 
formula doesn’t give intuitive p values, it is also true that you cannot pick 
sensible d values for a repository without knowing various characteristics 
about the repository.

I will think about this, and see if I can come up with a better formula, one 
which gives the desired result, which picks the number of digits that reduces 
the chances of a collision in daily use to some arbitrarily low value.

I hope you will be out there trying to beat me to that superior formula. :)
