Our pediatrician has advised us against using deet on our children. He told us to only use sprays with a deet concentration of 5% or lower. Our experience has been that the lowest amount we can find is around 6.5% and they are almost useless in fending off the bugs. Also, we know of several documented cases in which adults died from respiratory distress after spraying themselves with bug sprays containing deet.
There are non-toxic deterents- one is hanging a fabric softener sheet off your collar or belt. We rub the softener sheets on our skin, but that is probably going to be shown to cause something awful too.
Seems we're doing such a fine job preserving the wetlands that we're making it easy for the bugs to mulitply.
