Pyrethrins are safe for mammals so long as they are not ingested. Many
excellent flea and tick baths for dogs and cats contain them.

I'm afraid there will be no 30-second solution here.  You will not get a
solid "Safe" or a solid "Deadly" from any toxicologist in his right mind.
The toxicity of pyrethrins has been long debated with plenty of muscle in
each camp.  Just as there was for Dursban and chlordane and DDT.  I'm afraid
you will each have to take the time to get informed and make your own
decision.  My personal experience with pyrethrins, as a life member of New
England Herpetological Society is that it was occassionally used to treat
mite infestations in snakes and lizards by novice keepers.  It generally
leaves them dead.  These are not invertebrates we are talking about here.

Here is the website for the agency doing the spraying here in Framingham.
They call resmethrin, "slightly toxic."
