In the book file in which the Appendix files reside, when you
highlight them and right click,
is the Chapter Numbering tab set to ALPHABETIC?
(Also, I believe Peter is suggesting that you change the
> The Chapter heading autonumber format for the Appendix is:

to
A:Appendix <$chapnum>:\sn
so that it can also use the ALPHABETIC setting.)
