Richard,

Thanks. This advice seems to be consistent with what the other framers
are saying. But, still getting one minor weirdness.

I have done what you said:

Changed appendix chapter title autonumber to use the <$chapnum> building
block:
        A:Appendix <$chapnum>:\sn

Reset table title and figure title autonumber definitions to use the
<$chapnum> building block.

Then, on my first appendix, from the book window, RMB the appendix ->
Pagination, I set the following:
        Chapter tab, select
                Chapter
                Format ALPHABETIC (N)
        Paragraph tab
                Restart numbering (Joe's advice)

However, this causes the first appendix to start with the letter "S",
which kind of makes sense since the first appendix is the 18th file in
the book.

How do I get the Appendix to start at "A"?

I tried entering a letter in the Chapter # box of the Numbering
Properties dialog, Chapter tab.

Thanks,

-Patrick

The latter. Your autonumber format for appendices should use the the
chapnum variable, just like chapters: Appendix <$chapnum>:\sn

Then, for the first appendix only, you go to Format>Document>Numbering,
and on the Chapter tab, click the first radio button, Chapter #, and set
Format to ALPHABETIC (N). For subsequent appendices, the Chapter
numbering remains set to Continue Numbering From Previous File in Book,
just like chapters after the first.

Your table headings use the chapnum variable for the chapter/appendix
number, so your appendix numbering has to be based on that variable.

HTH!
Richard
