Not entirely true. If you save a document as MIF from any version of Frame, that MIF file can be opened from *any* version of FrameMaker. If the MIF file has content that uses features that didn't yet exist in the FrameMaker version that is opening the file (e.g. any of the expanded complement of system variables that was added in FM6, or master page mapping to paragraph tags), the older version will simply ignore that part of the MIF code and you won't get full functionality.
