Has anyone mentioned Bob Huot <[email protected]>? And Diana Barrie (not sure where she is at the moment)?

Kevin,

Two places to look would be in the programs for the 8 Fest (Toronto) and the Chicago 8 Fest, both of which screen exclusively from small gauge film. This should give you a slew of filmmakers.

Also, to add to the lists:

Janis Crystal Lipzin - http://vimeo.com/user4763308

Karen Johannesen - http://karenjohannesen.com/

Jason Halprin (me) - http://jasonhalprin.com

Bill Stamets - (I don't think Bill has a web presence for his films, just his journalism)

Pablo Marin - http://vimeo.com/user2758835 (Pablo has also done extensive research and programming on Argentine Experimental Filmmakers engaged with Super 8)

Dagie Brundert - http://www.wabisabisuper8.com/

Philippe Côte - http://philippecote.wordpress.com/

Francois Boué - I couldn't find his website, but there's a lot on his work out there

Steve Polta - I also can't find his personal website, but you should be able to track down his films

You can check on Collectif Jeune Cinéma website/or ask

We have a huge collection of S8 films
(sometimes the English version of the website is a little bit weird)

Enjoy!

That's a query with a huge, huge body of possible responses. I'm thinking of my favourite super 8 film (Guy Maddin's "Brand Upon The Brain!"), but then also of people who are really situated around Super 8 like John Porter, or about "Our Nixon," which was compiled recently out of archival Super 8 that was shot by some of the titular president's top aides, and then to innovative approaches to the small gauge like the widescreen UltraPan8, which while not "Super 8" per se, may still be of great interest to your workshop participants.

As you can see, responding to such a questions can get somewhat rambly (at least for me). Are you looking for artists who have used the format in a particular way? Are you more interested in experimental/avant garde examples (as opposed to, say, a lot of Oliver Stone films)? If not, that's fine, just thought I'd see if I could narrow it down in my own head!

There are also a great many workshops and festivals concerned with super 8. One Take Super 8 and straight 8 come to mind, although I'm sure there are more (these, and others as well, are centred on the conceit that the films produced must be edited in camera). And then, shameless plug alert, there's my own Canadian Frame(lines) project in which my partner Alexandra Caulfield and I took a roving series of super 8 shooting and processing workshops on the road to rural Canadian towns: canadianframelines.com.
