Don't use "pkg info" then. Use "pkg leaf":

% pkg info | wc -l
% pkg leaf | wc -l

"leaf" is an alias for:
pkg 'query -e "%a == 0" "%n-%v"'

And to everyone complaining about the number of packages: How many of
you have actually used the packaged base?
