It's already been mentioned, but I would strongly recommend PCBSD for the windows convert. Having PCBSD allows me to easily setup friends and family with systems that function more like they're used while maintaining all FreeBSD funtionality including the ports tree, blessed be the FreeBSD maintainers.
However, it's important to have realistic expections.
