It doesn't "rewuire" the snapshot. That is a feature that is helpful in not missing changes and needs the '-L' flag. But, it will dump just nicely without it and only be momentarily confused on restore if files are missing that show up in the dump directory and will not even know about files that are created after the dump directory was created.
