Why don't you build it from ports and save yourself a lot of problems?

(1) because this doesn't build 1.2.2, it starts building "1.0.2" when I type make install.

This strongly suggests that your ports tree is out-of-date. This port's Makefile should start with:

# New ports collection makefile for: anjuta
# Date created:                         31 March 2001
# Whom:                                 Dmitry Sivachenko <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
#
# $FreeBSD: ports/devel/anjuta/Makefile,v 1.26 2004/05/06 02:54:02 bland Exp $
#

PORTNAME=       anjuta
PORTVERSION=    1.2.2
[ ... ]

So if anyone has more help to offer besides "use the ports" that would be
really great.

How about: "update your ports collection first, then use the ports".
