Details:

with 2.2 I set default_tileset_name="hex2t" and topology=9 and
the geometry of the map becomes "hex", i.e., north is up, south is down, the
window borders are parallel to north/south/east/west.
and, most importantly, each hex cell has 6 neighbors.
now, with the topology="WRAPX|HEX|ISO" setting I do get the
window borders in the right directions (N/S/E/W) but each hex 
cell has 8 neighbors, as if it were a square.
