'crash without any warning' means Memtest.exe doesn't quit by itself (hey, XMS detected, now I cannot start!) but just starts and plain crashes. End user is thus forced to think himself of 'hey, maybe this program does not like XMS driver being loaded!'
Okay, I've looked over MemTest's operation. I'm reasonably confident I can make a device driver wrapper so you can DEVICE= load Memtest first in CONFIG.SYS before XMS and EMS and any other driver kicks in and makes things difficult. I say first, but of course it would also load last, since MemTest would take over, wipe memory, and nothing else in CONFIG.SYS would execute. I also think -- but just think -- the file image would be UPX'able based on UPX claims of working with device driver files.
However, I won't expend the necessary time and energy to go ahead on the attempt unless you really want and could use a CONFIG.SYS loadable MemTest version for FreeDOS. Otherwise, best to lean on Eric about modifying the DOS command line EXE version he wrote to give the messages and behavior you want.
