Why does the newbie use DOS when he has no idea what DOS is?
He will get stuck because there is no button to klick anyway.

Forwarding to Fritz. Maybe he should mention it on the
front page of HTMLHELP :-). That would also make sense
because you cannot print a whole story (about what DOS
is and how you can use DOS) inside your autoexec...

Into freedosdistro.com?? No I really suggest doing
ALIAS VER=fdver where fdver is a BAT file and not
something hardcoded into a kernel or a command.com
which have nothing to do with what distro you use.

For example /proc/version and uname -a also tend to
NOT show a distro name while things like there are
tools like lsb_release which are specifically made
to describe the distro and not the kernel or shell.

[doing "SET foo=bar " to set a value to "bar "]

Try which versions are affected - FreeCOM 0.82pl3 or 0.84?
File a bug report. If config.sys is also affected, let me know.
I think stripping trailing spaces can be useful but make
sure to check when and where MS DOS does it (not Win9x DOS).
Because I remember some people also liked the ability to
use trailing spaces in "echo ... " and "set foo=... " style.
