Either hardcode a string (ECHO Welcome to FreeDOS 1.1) to Autoexec.bat,
and/or: expand the VER command in FreeCOM to show "if kernel versionX
and Freecom version Y then "print FreeDOS 1.1".
Additionally, VER can be expanded to handle old kernels for example
(FreeDOS 0.xx - please upgrade to 1.1 or later).

an FDVER.BAT could also be an option indeed.

I've still got batchfile code lying around for self-updating bootdisk
image based on 1.0..too bad there's no actual working CDRECORD or WODIM
port for DOS (with DVD writing support, that is..)
Michael Kostylev had one (i386-msdos-djgpp), but it didn't allow my
optical drive, and his page (or the content) seem to have disappeared. [
