32-bit code is shorter and there will be remained around 30 bytes.

If it can be done for 8086/88, it's better - some XT can be equipped with an IDE card with its own BIOS, and FAT32 partitions can be as small as 128 MB as far as I know, so the hard disk needn't be too big. Even a FAT32-formatted compact flash card could be used for 80186-based embedded systems.


BTW, in fat12 there currently 53 bytes free (was 0), in fat16 there 59 bytes.

Great, but again - is it tested, does it work? I hope so, since no LBA BIOS is required for it.
