Maybe you saved it in Unicode / UTF-8? Or in Word or something ;-) You could try other free or shareware editors like TextPad to make sure that your file is really text. Of course it could also be the case that something on your filesystem confuses DOS and the gibberish is not even part of what your Notepad put in the file.
