Alan, After some issues with getting freeradius compiled on an alpha with gentoo linux one of the developers of the libshadow complains about the proposed solution of adding -fPIC to libshadow. (to get linking with libshadow working..)
One of the statements is that libshadow is internal use only and should not be used by third party developers....
